Sumary: 

La Llicencia BSD té les mateixes llibertats que la GPL però amb la diferencia que tens la possibilitat de modificar el codi i no tornar les millores a la comunitat. En un sentit és més lliure que la GPL ja que et permet totes les llibertats amb el codi. Però aquesta llicencia no ajuda al desenvolupament del programar lliure ja que els canvis creats no són obligatoris, i no crea intercanvi de coneixements si un no té la suficient ètica per fer-ho.

En un altre sentit també és més lliure, si també s' opina que la llicencia BSD és més lliure que la GPL, al igual que un país que permet l' esclavitut és més lliure que el país que no la permet.
